The 20 Best Songs to Come out of Scotland

Whilst I’m sitting here in self-isolation with all my travel plans around Scotland for this month postponed temporarily, I’ve been using the time to think about the greatest Scottish songs of all time! I figured since I never get the time to make up a playlist these days I might as well use the boredom of being stuck in the house to make up one for both myself and you should you want to play it! So below I’ve compiled a list of the best songs produced by Scottish bands or musicians in recent decades give or take the odd oldie. I’ve also limited myself to just one song per artist. These are some of my favourite Scottish artists, so for some of them it was hard not to include several songs! If you can think of any I’ve missed out or you disagree in anyway with what I’ve included – let me know in the comments section below or on social media. I’m always up for a debate on music! 🙂

Below is a written list of what’s included in the playlist if you can’t access the Spotify widget above for some reason so you can add them to your own playlist on whatever music app you use. Please note: the list is in no particular order...

1. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – The Proclaimers

2. Keep Yourself Warm – Frightened Rabbit

3. Someone You Loved – Lewis Capaldi

4. Daddy’s Gone – Glasvegas

5. Belter – Gerry Cinnamon

6. Heart and Soul – Twin Atlantic

7. Same Jeans – The View

8. Shout – Lulu

9. Next to Me – Emeli Sande

10. Why Does It Always Rain On Me? – Travis

11. Baker Street – Gerry Rafferty

12. Iron Sky – Paolo Nutini

13. Many of Horror – Biffy Clyro

14. Don’t You (Forget About Me) – Simple Minds

15. The Mother We Share – CHVRCHES

16. Walking On Broken Glass – Annie Lennox

17. Other Side of the World – KT Turnstall

18. Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand

19. Caledonia – Dougie MacClean

20. Loch Lomond – Runrig

So what do you think? Is there any I should have included?

What about Garbage? I thought they were Scottish, but now I’m second guessing myself

Good shout! I didn’t actually realise Garbage were Scottish as I thought they were American but it turns out the singer is Scottish! 🙂
